India is set to become the world’s youngest country with 64 per cent of its population in the working age group by the year 2020.A demographically young India will be the largest contributor to the global work force in the coming decades, and will add about 110 million workers by 2020, as per the study by Goldman Sachs. In order to take advantage of this favorable demographics, skill development process should become the focus. A methodical and strategic intervention for improving the competency of young work force is the route map for enjoying the benefits of this historical opportunity. This demographic potential offers India and its growing economy an unprecedented edge that economists believe could add a significant 2 percent to the GDP growth rate.
Recent years has witnessed a downward trend in terms of international employability of skilled people from this part of the country at a time when talented hands are of high demand across the globe. This is visible even in areas where we were having upper hands like nursing and teaching. The Economic Survey 2014-15 has stated that as per the Labour Bureau Report 2014, the present skilled workforce in India is only 2 percent, which is much lower when compared to the developing nations.
In order to regain the acceptability of teachers from this region, they should be equipped with the 21st century skill sets. They need to be re profiled from teachers to professional educators. Empowering them with the latest knowledge and skill sets for forging global excellence, not only has a personal benefit of getting them placed in the best schools across the world, but has a long term effect on the building up of a futuristic society enriched with moral and social values.
Today, teaching profession is not a sought after one. Most of the time teachers are teachers by chance and not by choice. This is because of the social perception. Teachers are not getting the social acceptability and respect that they enjoyed decades ago. Brilliant brains are not in this profession. This is high time that a paradigm shift is required in this sector. The paradox is that these perceptions are existing when meritorious teachers are of highest in demand everywhere. They are enjoying much better emoluments than many other sectors. There is a huge space for scaling up. It is all about breaking the mindset.
Though they are graduated in education, they are lacking a lot of skills that are so important to scale up in a transformed social scenario like information technology related skills, communication skills, administrative skills etc. They also required to be groomed. This is where our teachers are losing the best opportunity to build a most respectable career. It is not because they don’t know the theory of teaching.
This is where CRETT came up with a unique concept of a finishing school for teachers. It is to up skill the teacher community with the required skills sets that will help them to get placed in the best schools across the globe. The program is also meant to groom the teacher community so that they will be getting the social acceptably and respect. We believe that once the financial benefits and social respectability is back, the best brains of our coming generation will start looking this profession as their first choice. CRETT envisions to design of a futuristic society through capacity building, streamlining skills and inculcating habits of excellence.
