Prof. (Dr.).P.J. Alexander is a scholar and trainer who retired as the Director General of Police, Kerala. He taught in the post graduate Department of Political Science, University of Kerala, before joining the IPS in the Kerala cadre on the results of the Indian Civil Service Examination in 1960. While in service he graduated in Law and took a Doctorate. Dr. Alexander served as Chief Executive of several PSUs of the state; Member Secretary of the Kerala Police Reorganization Commission; Visiting Faculty in various teaching and training institutes; Professor and Director, Institute of Management in Government during his tenure. After retirement as Director General of Police, Kerala, he served as a consultant in building Institution of Criminal Justice with the Asian Human Rights Commission, in Cambodia under the UNTAC. He was also the training faculty of the multinational police forces under the UN in east Timor. Dr. Alexander has authored and edited a few books and published a number of papers. He acts as a guide to doctoral students from the University of Kerala and National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Cochin. He also consults with the Kerala Law Reforms Commission under Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer, Director, Centre for Criminal Justice Reforms in consultative status with the Asian Human Rights Commission. Society and Politics:Issues and Perspectives(1998) is a Festschrift in his honour. Dr. Alexander’s current research interests and activism include Electoral Reforms, Criminal Justice Reforms and Human Rights. He is a frequent face in various media discussions on various state and national topics. At the Legal Assistance Centre Dr. Alexander guides, provides quality support to victims of Criminal Justice System and Human Rights abuse.
